St. Timothy's, Roxborough & La Resurrecion, Zacapa
A Companion Relationship
In cooperation with the Diocesan Companion Parish Relationship with Guatemala, St. Timothy's has been active in a companion relationship with La Resurrecion in Zacapa for over one year.
The Companion Parish program helps North American dioceses and churches develop significant relationships with their Anglican brothers and sisters through the world. The Diocese of Pennsylvania has been in relationship with Guatemala for numerous years.
Parishioner Megan Terry learned of this relationship and for many reasons wanted to get involved. She worked with teh diocesan liasons to find a church suited for St. Tim's. Megan is working with the Sunday School and with interested parishioners to form a relationship with the people of La Resurrecion, crossing cultural and language barriers with the goal of getting to know some of our Guatemalan brothers and sisters in Christ.
Although at first glance it seems like St. Tim's only prays for their friends in Guatemala, Megan has worked lovingly to send packages to La Resurrecion filled with information about our parish, pictures, information about Philadelphia and more.
Megan's vision is to share with St. Tim's her passion for Guatemala and to help people remember that the world is bigger than Roxborough, and even bigger than the United States.
St. Timothy's has a history of helping others locally, nationally and globally and this program is just one more way for the St. Timothy's family to stay connected.
The Quetzal is the national bird of Guatemala, also the name of the official currency of the country, signifies peace and harmony. However, the bird is also known for its rich plummage, especially the long feathers of its tail that were once as valuable as precious stones.
The term "quetzal" was a generic name for everything beautiful and expensive. The "quetzal" was
the representation of abundance, propersity and goodness. Today the Quetzal, call quetzaltototl in the Nahuatl language and Tidaa ii in the Mixteco language (two indigenous, Guatemalan tongues), is still a symbol of goodness and beauty.
Vincent, a teenage parishioner at La Resurrecion, sent St. Tim's a beautiful, hand-carved, wooden Quetzal that is on display in the Godly Play Room in recognition of the companionship between our two churches.
What's Going On?
Companionship Happenings
Every Sunday, as a parish, St. Timothy's prays for the members of La Iglesia de La Resurrecion in Zacapa, Guatemala. Megan Terry recently mailed a Christmas package to Zacapa that included personal Christmas wishes from the St. Timothy's family, photos and souvenirs from Philadelphia. Some American recipes were included in the box in hopes that the people of La Resurrecion will send recipes for Guatemalan food for us to try!
Another "Care Package" will be sent for the Easter season
that will include "A Splendid Legacy," a history of St. Tim's.
Megan is looking to expand the companion program and is working with the point-person from Guatemala to identify
needs and desires.
